An aerial view of town of Novy Urengoy, West Siberia, taken 17 June 2006. Urengoy gas field is the world's second largest natural gas field, with over ten trillion cubic meters (10ął mł) in total deposits. It lies in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in Tyumen Oblast (region) of Russia, just south of the Arctic circle and is named after the settlement of Urengoy. Novy Urengoy is home to 110,000 people, most of whom are employed by OAO Gazprom, the world's largest gas producer. Discovered in June 1966, the field started production in 1978. In February 1981 Urengoy produced its first one hundred billion cubic meters (109 mł) of natural gas. From January 1984 Urengoy gas started to be exported to Western Europe. It continues to produce over two hundred billion cubic meters of gas per year. AFP PHOTO MAXIM NARMUR
