Portugal. Lisbon region. Sintra. Aerial view of the National Palace of Pena. Perched on one of the highest points of the Serra, this palace was built in the middle of the 19C. by King Ferdinand II around an old convent of hieronymites dating from the 16C. His extravagance evokes certain castles of Louis II of Bavaria, although he had preceded them by thirty years. In 1839, after having bought the ruins of a 15th century hieronymite monastery, this same sovereign entrusted the construction of his summer palace to Baron Ludwig von Eschwege. This one blithely blends the architectural styles: Moorish, Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Manueline, in order to deliver an exuberant and colorful building, but which nevertheless retains some parts of the old monastery (Photo by AIR PANO / ONLY WORLD / Only France via AFP)
