László Vígh received a degree in Chemistry from the József Attila University in 1975. He has been working at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Biological Research Center at Szeged ever since. He was director of the Institute between 1994 and 2004. In 1998, he received the Széchenyi Prize, and he became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2004. His main fields of research are stress perception and signalling via the lipid matrix of cell membranes; investigating the mechanism of the expression of stress proteins and related pharmacological research and development; application of new methods to explore membrane microdomains. Introduction of lipidomics into cell biology and pharmacological research. László Vígh is the author of around 140 publications and book chapters, and he holds some 10 patents. The pursuit of his studies over the years has taken him to the Groningen State University, the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, the Texas State University in Austin, the National Biological Research Centre in Okozaki, Japan, and the University of California in Santa Cruz (UCSC).
