Researchers' Night is a European-wide event scheduled for 22 September with programs popularizing scientific research running simultaneously in 25 European countries. From early morning until late at night various exciting, festival-like programs are planned for visitors in the two cities to demonstrate how science and scientific activities affect and help our everyday lives.

The two highlighted topics of the day focus on how science helps us protect and study the Earth and how various scientific fields together can spread environmentally-conscious behaviour.

The Main Topics:
Sustainable Development
Natural Disasters
Can Plastic Be Green?
Nuclear Energy - Green Energy
Conscious Consumption, Organic Products, GMOs

Detailed programme

The events of the day include: guided tours of the mysterious labs of ELTE, BME and the Széchenyi University, including a ride in the flight simulator of BME. Trips to the Szemlőhegyi cave and Lukács Spa unveil the underground world of Budapest, while a boat ride on the Danube allows visitors to discover the riverbed with the help of sonar equipment. Outdoor programs held in Győr will open up the world of stars, and a scientific experiment will demonstrate that the Earth does indeed move.

In the evening a live Internet and TV program will be made in the House of the Future on the topic of sustainable development, touching upon issues such as natural disasters, global climate change, environmental protection, nuclear energy, green energy, conscious consumerism and GMO. The program is designed to facilitate discussion between the general public and non-governmental organizations, political decision makers, corporations and scientists. The closing event of the day is called "Researchers' Pub", where researchers and inventors talented in other areas (e.g. music) will entertain the audience.

An online game is scheduled for launch on 1 September on the www.mindentudas.hu website. Students can also participate in a contest of posters, photos and objects made from waste metal. The awards ceremony and the opening of the exhibition are scheduled for 22 September in the House of the Future.

Partner institutions of the Researchers' Night event are: Tempus Public Foundation, ENCOMPASS, ELTE, BME, Széchenyi István University (Győr)
