She received her medical degree in 1973 from Semmelweis Medical University. She worked at the Pharmaceutical Research Institute for a year. She has taught at Semmelweis Medical University since 1973 and has been a head of department since 1990. Between 1996 and 1999 she was scientific vice-rector, a post she has again held since 2003. In 1990, she studied in London at King's College and the Institute of Psychiatry, and in New York at the Centre of Neurochemistry. In addition to her scientific work, she teaches biochemistry to medical students in Hungarian and English.
She edited the course book, Medical Biochemistry, which has been republished. Her research field is neurochemistry, more directly, the role of mitochondria and oxidative stress in the development of neurodegenerative illnesses and ischemic brain damage. She has been corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 2001. She is a member of numerous Hungarian and international scientific societies, secretary-general of the European Neurochemical Association and a member of the presidency of the International Neurochemical Association.
