John Lukacs (Lukács János), one of the best-known historians of our age, was born in Hungary in 1924, but right after World War II, he emigrated to the United States, where he made a career. From 1947 to 1994 he was a teacher of the Chestnut Hill College in the state of Pennsylvania, where he also worked as the Chair until 1974. As a guest professor, he held lectures at the largest American universities: Columbia, Princeton and Johns Hopkins. In addition, he also gives lectures at ELTE and at the Central European University (CEU). He has written more than twenty books, most of which were translated into foreign languages. Since the change of regime, the majority of his works are available in Hungarian as well. His main field of research is the history of World War II. He also wrote a number of essays on historical philosophy and works of an autobiographical character.
