Károly Vissy was born in 1935 in Miskolc. He obtained a degree in meteorology at Eötvös Lóráand University (ELTE) in 1957, since then he has worked at the National Meteorology Service. Until 1993 he was the director of the Central Forecasting Institute, currently he is the professional counsellor of the president. His main fields of activity include weather forecasting and the development of its methods, organising the meteorology service for civil flights, economic exploitation of meteorology services and establishing Hungarian media-meteorology. From 1968 he worked for Hungarian Radio and from 1972 he was contributor to Hungarian Television. In 1971-72 he took part in the 17th Soviet Antarctic Expedition. Between 1973 and 1999 he was the official representative of Hungary in the Flight Meteorological and Basic Systems Committee of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
