He was born in 1935. He completed his university studies at the Biology and Chemistry Departments of Eötvös Lóránd University in 1957. He obtained a post-graduate (candidate's) degree in biology in 1965 and a doctorate in 1975. Originally he worked at the Medical Chemistry Institute of the Semmelweis University then in 1984 he joined the Biology Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) in Szeged. He was director of the Biochemistry Institute between 1984 and 1993 and chief director between 1994 and 1996. From 1997 he has been research professor here. He has worked abroad on numerous occasions; he was visiting professor at Kyoto University in 2000-2001.
