He was born in 1951. He began his career as historian in Kecskemét as an archivist; he was then a research fellow of the History Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) between 1977 and 1985. He was deputy director of the Magyar Research Institute, since when he has been teaching at the Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE). In1991, he became an accredited Doctor of history in 1996 and then professor of the Department of Modern Hungarian History in 1998. For periods between 1993 and 1998 he was a visiting professor at the Hungarian Department of Indiana University (USA). He became a corresponding member of MTA in 2001. His main area of research is the history of politics in Twentieth century Hungary, especially the period between the two world wars (Trianon - the Treaty of Versailles and the Horthy era).
