He graduated from the Hungarian and Philosophy Departments of Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE) in 1969. Initially he worked as the editor of Magvető and later of Gondolat Publishing Houses. Between 1980 and 1990 he was a freelance writer and from 1990 he taught at the Aesthetics Department of ELTE, being appointed university professor in 1993. Since 1989 he has been editor of Holmi. He is the author of many Hungarian and foreign language books and his studies have been published in more than fifty Hungarian and foreign language volumes and journals. He is a member of the Hungarian Writers' Association and the Hungarian Journalists' Association. Between 1995 and 1999 he was a member of the jury of the Book Competition of the Soros Foundation. From 1997 to 2000 he participated in the work of the Literary Sub-Committee of the Kossuth and Széchenyi Awards. In 1991 he received the Déry Tibor Award and the Mikes Prize and in 1994 the József Attila Award. His research is mainly related to the interface between culture philosophy and art philosophy, currently he is working on a study on the philosophy of museums.
