Born in 1948 in Budapest, he graduated from the French and Hungarian Departments of Lóránd Eötvös University (ELTE). Between 1971 and 1993 he worked at the Renaissance Research Group of the Literary Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). He became a Doctor of literature in 1992 and in 1993 he established the Post-graduate Centre for Renaissance Research (CHER) under the umbrella of the Graduate School of the Hungarian Literary History Institute of ELTE. From 1993 he was reader at the Old Hungarian Literature Department of ELTE and from 1995 university professor, he is also visiting professor at the University of Naples. Between 2000 and 2002 he taught at the Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris III, Paris. Since 2002 he has been the head of the Old Hungarian Literary History Department of ELTE His research area is the Renaissance and prosody. He is a modernizer of text editions and is one of the pioneers of the use of computers in literary sciences. He gave a new direction to the research of Balassi with his text editions and his historic-poetic monograph published in 1982. He was the first to publish the first textual criticism on the net. (Complete poems of Bálint Balassi, 1998). His chief achievement is the publication of Attila Josef's studies and article on the Internet.
