László Fésüs was born in 1947 in Hernádnémeti. He completed his secondary education in Sárospatak and graduated from the Medical University of Debrecen in 1972. He is a university professor, Academician and director of the Biochemical and Molecular Biology Institute of the University of Debrecen. Formerly he was the rector of the university and currently he presides over the Medical and Health Sciences Centre of the university. He is the president of the Cell and Development Biology Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), the Biotechnology Programme Committee, the Hungarian Rectors' Bologna Conference, and heads the national consortium of Genomic Research for Human Health. As a researcher he first studied the connection between the immune system and blood coagulation and for nearly 20 years has been researching the details of natural cell death and the mechanism of molecular apoptosis, more precisely the role of enzymes cross-binding proteins. He coordinates several cell-death research programmes in Europe, has initiated several international series of conferences, and has founded scientific journals. His results and bulletins (134 in total) have stimulated wide interest, the majority of which have been published in leading international journals. He has also founded a scientific school.
