Zsuzsa Ferge graduated with a degree in economics from the Karl Marx University of Economics in 1953. In 1968 she received a post-graduate degree in philosophy and in 1982 she became Doctor of sociology. In 1993 she became member of the European Academy. In 1995 she received the Széchenyi award and the Pro Urbe Award in 1996. In 1997 she received an honorary Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. In 2001 she obtained the Hazám (My country) award and in 2002 was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Hungarian Republic. In 1993 and in 1997 she was a Visiting fellow at the IWM (Institut für die Wissenschaften von Menschen) in Vienna and has been a visiting professor at Essex University (UK), Columbia University, New York, Institut für Höhere Studien (Austria) and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland (USA) and as part of the TEMPUS programme, Edinburgh University, Rome; and the Central European University (Prague). Between 1953 and 1968 she headed the Social Stratification Research Department of the Central Statistics Office. Between 1968 and 1988 she was a senior research fellow and headed the Social Politics Department of Sociological Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). Between 1988 and 1996 she headed the Social Policy Department, Sociology and Social Policy Institute of Eötvös Lóránd University. From 1996 she was university professor here and from 2001 she has been Professor Emeritus.
