He obtained a degree from the General Medical Sciences Department of the Semmelweis Medical University in 1963. In 1980 he received a post-doctorate degree in medicine. From 1963 he worked as physician at the Dermatology and Sexual Pathology Clinic of Semmelweis Medical University. From 1991 to 2005 he headed the National Dermatology and Sexual Pathology Institute. He played a decisive role in controlling the domestic spread of HIV infections. His results are widely known and influential, being replicated in many parts of the world. He started the medical sociology course at Semmelweis University. His main fields of research include the study of the clinical and sociological aspects of sexually transmitted diseases and the effect of early HIV infections on the immune system. He fulfils leading functions in several domestic and foreign professional organisations.
